Mike Roberts has over 20 years experience in senior positions in the private and public sectors in corporate affairs, stakeholder engagement and sustainability. He joined Net Balance in 2009 after six and a half years with the Australian based toll road operator Transurban. His position there was Group General Manager Corporate Relations and Marketing and General Manager Sustainability. He developed the company’s sustainability agenda, managing the cultural change initiatives that supported it. He introduced sustainability reporting at Transurban. Mike was also responsible for the development and implementation of Government and media relations and stakeholder engagement strategies on Transurban’s first toll road, CityLink in Melbourne. He was part of the management team that led Transurban’s expansion into Sydney and the United States.

After leaving Transurban, Mike worked pro bono for four months at the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority. He was the Development Manager for Marysville, the town that was almost completely destroyed in the bushfires of February 2009. In this role, he oversaw development of an economic development strategy and an urban design framework for the new Marysville.

Mike began his working life in journalism and has experience in newspapers, radio and television in Australia and the UK. He was Principal Press Secretary and Media Unit Director for the former Victorian Premier, John Cain, and Chief of Staff to the former Federal Industry Minister, Senator John Button. In this role he was a policy advisor on the car, pharmaceutical and textile, clothing and footwear industries.

Outside work, Mike and his partner Eva put sustainability principles to work in a major renovation of their Melbourne home. The project gave them a detailed appreciation of the challenges (and costs) involved in retrofitting sustainability features to what was originally an old inner city police station.
